Heather & Ryan’s Backyard Wedding: A Laid-Back Day Full of Love, Laughter, and a Little Wind
There’s something about a backyard wedding that just hits differently. No massive production, no running around trying to please a hundred different people, and no pressure to make everything look like it belongs in a wedding magazine. Just two people getting married, the people they love most, and a whole lot of friends and family pitching in to make it happen.
That’s exactly what Heather and Ryan wanted for their wedding day, and honestly? They absolutely nailed it.
From Neighboring High Schools to a Proposal in Japan
Heather and Ryan initially met at a friend’s house. They had gone to neighboring high schools, so they already knew ofeach other, but they had never officially crossed paths until that day.
Fast-forward a bit, and the two found themselves on vacation in Japan with friends. On the very first day of the trip, Ryan proposed to Heather. Talk about kicking off a vacation on a high note!
And before long, they were planning a wedding that felt just like them: small, intimate, relaxed, and centered around bringing their families together.
All Hands on Deck in the Backyard
When I arrived on the wedding day, things were already in full swing. And by full swing, I mean everyone was working hard to convince a tent that it absolutely did not need to fly away.
The wind had other plans.
Because Heather and Ryan were getting married in their own backyard, so much of the day was a DIY effort. Friends and family were everywhere, setting up tables, arranging flowers, finishing the ceremony space, and making sure everything was ready for the celebration. Heather’s dad was even putting together the propane patio heaters for later that evening.
Meanwhile, the guys were getting ready at an Airbnb, and Heather was at home with her family and friends, getting her hair and makeup done.
There was laughter, a little chaos, plenty of things to do, and everyone pitching in wherever they were needed. It felt less like a formal wedding production and more like a big group of people coming together to throw an incredible party for two people they loved.
And that’s one of my favorite things about weddings like this. The little behind-the-scenes moments are part of the story, too.
Getting Heather Ready
While everyone was busy getting the backyard ready, I spent some time photographing the details and the excitement happening inside the house.
Once Heather’s hair and makeup were finished, it was time to get dressed. Upstairs, her mom helped her into her wedding dress, her aunt helped with her hair and veil, and her friends jumped in to button the back of her dress and help her get her shoes on.
It was a real team effort, which seemed to be the theme of the entire day.
After she was ready, Heather tucked herself away in the basement so she could stay hidden until the ceremony. The guys arrived, everyone finished putting the last pieces of the ceremony site together, and the backyard was finally ready for the main event.
Well, mostly ready. I’m pretty sure that tent was still testing everyone's patience.
A Short, Sweet, and Personal Backyard Ceremony
Heather and Ryan kept their ceremony simple and intimate, exactly as they wanted it. With their closest family and friends gathered together in the backyard, they exchanged vows in a setting that was personal to them.
Heather’s uncle officiated the ceremony, which came with a pretty funny little connection to the past.
Apparently, when Heather was a kid, she interrupted his own wedding ceremony and managed to steal the show for quite some time. Years later, there he was, officiating her wedding.
The irony? Heather and Ryan opted for a child-free wedding.
I guess they decided to keep the ceremony interruption-free this time around!
The ceremony itself was short and sweet, and before long, the two were officially married. No elaborate production or drawn-out formalities. Just Heather, Ryan, their people, and a really meaningful moment in their own backyard.
Backyard Drinks, Family Photos, and Time to Relax
After the ceremony, everyone moved into cocktail hour, and the whole day settled into that easygoing rhythm Heather and Ryan had envisioned.
We knocked out the family formals and grabbed some quick portraits of the newlyweds while everyone mingled and enjoyed themselves. I knew I wanted to save some time later for a few cinematic nighttime portraits, so we kept things moving without pulling Heather and Ryan away from their guests for too long.
And then there was the beer situation.
Because why have a fancy, complicated drink station when you have a tractor?
The beer was chilling in the bucket of their tractor out in the front yard, which felt perfectly fitting for a backyard wedding. It was practical, fun, and just a little bit different from the usual wedding bar setup.
Once dinner rolled around, everyone grabbed a plate, found a seat, and settled in for a meal together. There were wonderful toasts, plenty of laughter, and time for everyone to catch up and enjoy the evening.
Nothing felt rushed. Nobody was being shuffled from one event to the next. Everyone could just be there, enjoy the food, celebrate the newlyweds, and soak up the time together.
Honestly, I wish more people gave themselves permission to plan weddings this way.
A Few Minutes in the Woods for Cinematic Night Portraits
As the evening went on, I stole Heather and Ryan away for a few minutes to head into the woods near their house.
This is one of my favorite things about photographing weddings with a little breathing room in the timeline. We didn't need to disappear for an hour or make a big production out of portraits. We just stepped away from the party for a few minutes and created something a little different.
Using off-camera lighting, we made a few nighttime portraits with a more cinematic feel. The dark woods gave us a completely different look from the relaxed backyard celebration, and it was the perfect little change of pace before heading back to the party.
Then it was back to the reception, because the dance floor was waiting.
A Dance Floor Full of People Ready to Party
Once the dance floor opened, Heather and Ryan’s family was ready to go.
The couple shared their first dances, everyone joined in, and the party got underway. There was dancing, laughing, and the kind of energy that happens when everyone is genuinely happy to be there.
After a day spent setting things up, keeping an eye on the weather, and making sure all the little details came together, everyone could finally let loose and celebrate.
And that’s what made this wedding so great. It wasn't about putting on a show. It was about having a really good time with the people who mattered most.
The Kind of Wedding That Reminds You What It's All About
Heather and Ryan wanted a simple wedding where their families could come together, celebrate their marriage, and enjoy a day that felt like them.
That's exactly what they got.
From the friends and family working together to pull off the backyard setup, to Heather getting ready with the people closest to her, to the tractor-bucket beer cooler and the dance floor full of happy guests, every part of the day felt personal.
Was everything perfectly controlled? Absolutely not. The wind had a few opinions about the tent situation, and there was plenty of work to do before the celebration could begin.
But that's part of what made it so good.
Their wedding wasn't about creating some picture-perfect production. It was about creating a day they would remember, surrounded by people who showed up, pitched in, and celebrated right alongside them.
Heather and Ryan, thank you for letting me be part of your wedding day! I loved how relaxed, fun, and true to you both it was. You brought your favorite people together, got married in your own backyard, and threw one hell of a good party.
And I think that's a pretty great way to start married life.
