Hemlock Bridge Engagement Sessions, Fryeburg, Maine | Dark & Moody Maine Engagement Photography

If there’s one thing I’ve realized after photographing engagement sessions all over Maine and New Hampshire, it’s this: the best locations are never just a one trick pony. I want variety. I want movement. I want soft romantic light and gritty cinematic vibes. I want a place that gives couples an actual experience instead of just plopping them in one spot for an hour like awkward HomeGoods mannequins.

That’s exactly why I fell back in love with Hemlock Covered Bridge during Courtney and Kyle’s engagement session.

It had honestly been forever since I had shot there, and the second I pulled up I remembered why this spot absolutely deserves a place on my list of favorite engagement session locations in Maine.

First off… the field.

The field at golden hour? Unreal. The way the sun drops behind the mountains creates that perfect warm glow without being overly harsh. It’s the kind of light photographers chase like caffeinated raccoons with cameras. You get these wide open views with mountains in the background, tall grass moving in the wind, and that soft golden light wrapping around couples in the best way possible. It feels relaxed, romantic, and a little wild in the best way.

Then you move into the gravel road surrounded by trees and suddenly the whole vibe changes. That’s what I love about this location. Within a few steps you can go from open airy mountain views to something moodier and more intimate. The tree-lined road creates natural framing and depth everywhere you look. It has that quiet backroad Maine feel that photographs ridiculously well.

And then there’s the river.

The river winds back and forth on both sides of the road, which gives so many opportunities for variety during a session. Some spots feel calm and peaceful while others have more texture and movement. You can shoot wide landscapes, close emotional moments, playful walking shots — all without needing to drive to another location. As a photographer, that kind of versatility is gold.

But obviously… the main attraction is the bridge itself.

Hemlock Covered Bridge is such a good spot for darker, moodier portraits. The wood tones, shadows, texture, and little pockets of light inside the bridge make it perfect for my dark and moody cinematic photography style. I love using the small windows in the bridge to shape light and create dramatic flash photography that feels a little edgier and more artistic. The contrast between the bright outdoors and the darker interior gives everything this cinematic feel that I’m obsessed with.

It’s honestly one of those locations that lets me fully lean into storytelling instead of just posing people.

And then once the sun starts dropping behind the mountains? We head right back to the field.

That’s when the fun flash work comes out.

The combination of the sunset glow, mountain backdrop, and dramatic flash creates some of my favorite images of the entire session. It gives couples a gallery that feels layered and intentional instead of repetitive. Romantic. Playful. Moody. Cinematic. A little badass. All in one location.

I think that’s the ongoing theme with all my favorite engagement session locations in Maine and New Hampshire, they offer variety. They let couples move, explore, relax, and actually enjoy themselves while also giving me endless creative options as a photographer.

Because the best engagement session locations aren’t just pretty.
They give you a full experience.
