Kat & J's Viking-Inspired Wedding in Portland, Maine | Downtown Portland Hotel, Fort Williams & Casco Bay
Some weddings are beautiful. Some weddings are emotional. And then there are weddings like Kat and J's...the kind that make your creative brain immediately start firing on all cylinders.
As a Portland, Maine wedding photographer, these are the days I live for. Couples who aren't afraid to be themselves. Couples who trust me to create something different. Couples who hand me Viking swords during detail photos and say, "Have fun."
Say less.
The day started at their hotel in downtown Portland, Maine, where everyone was already getting ready. It was one of those calm, laid-back mornings that every wedding photographer secretly hopes for. No chaos. No panic. Just good music, good people, and plenty of excitement.
I started by photographing all of their details, and this is where I knew this wedding was going to be something special. Alongside the rings and invitations sat two Viking swords that would later be used during the ceremony. I absolutely love this shit. Give me personality over cookie-cutter traditions every single time. Kat was even having her hairstylist create an intricate Viking-inspired hairstyle that perfectly matched the vibe they were going for.
During the original consult, J kept told me that he wanted a lot of the dramatic off-camera flash work and cinematic portraits. You know...the kind of images that look like they belong on a movie poster. If you've followed my work for any amount of time, you already know that's basically my love language.
Since Kat and J were getting ready in rooms right next to each other, I bounced back and forth between them all morning, documenting everything as it unfolded naturally. Once Kat finished hair and makeup, she slipped into her dress, and we headed upstairs to Luna Rooftop at Canopy Portland Waterfront for their first look.
These two are hilarious together.
There wasn't a second that felt forced. They laughed, joked, soaked it all in, and then we piled into the car to head over to Fort Williams Park in Cape Elizabeth, Maine for the ceremony.
If you're planning a Fort Williams wedding, it's hard to beat the scenery. Between the rugged Maine coastline, sweeping ocean views, and iconic landscape, it's one of my favorite places for intimate weddings and portraits.
Their ceremony was short, heartfelt, and full of laughs, officiated by one of their close friends. It felt less like a formal production and more like everyone had gathered together to celebrate two people they genuinely loved.
Afterward, we did something I wish more couples would do.
They gave me an entire hour for portraits.
Seriously...this is the dream.
Instead of rushing through photos in fifteen minutes, we wandered through Fort Williams Park, chasing the best pockets of light, finding dramatic backgrounds, and creating images that actually felt like them. I mixed natural light with my off-camera strobes to create those dark, cinematic portraits they had been hoping for all along. Every location became another opportunity to build something with mood, depth, and a little bit of badass energy. The result was exactly what we'd envisioned, portraits that felt less like wedding photos and more like scenes pulled straight from a movie.
As the sun dipped lower, we headed to the waterfront where the coolest part of the day was waiting.
A water taxi.
It was just Kat, J, the captain, and me cruising across the harbor toward their reception. Their guests waited on the dock while the newlyweds made one seriously unforgettable entrance by boat. Honestly, I don't know why more couples don't do this. It was ridiculously fun and such a uniquely Maine way to kick off the party.
The reception was filled with exactly what you'd expect after spending the day with these two, lots of laughter, heartfelt stories, and some incredibly emotional speeches. One of my favorite parts of the evening was watching their grown children enjoy the evening with them. It wasn’t just about Kat & J. It was about uniting their families. Those moments carried so much love and respect..
By the end of the night, I found myself thinking exactly what I'd suspected from the moment I photographed those Viking swords that morning.
I knew this wedding was going to be one of my favorites of the year.
Kat and J created a wedding that reflected exactly who they are. They skipped anything that didn't fit them, embraced the things they loved, trusted their vendors, and made the day feel completely authentic. That's always where the best weddings happen.
Congratulations, Kat and J. Thank you for trusting me to tell your story and for giving me every photographer's dream, a day full of incredible people, unforgettable moments, cinematic light, and just enough Viking energy to keep things interesting.
