Maine & NH Wedding Photographer// Dodging Rain and Finding Charm – Matt + Maylen’s Old Port Engagement Session
You know what’s not invited to the party? Weekend rain. But Maine weather does what it wants, and we’ve learned to roll with it. Matt and Maylen were supposed to have their engagement session the night before, but the skies were like, “Nah.” So we pivoted like pros and snagged the only dry window that weekend—mid-afternoon, sandwiched right between drizzle sessions. Cue the dramatic clouds and moody light... basically my love language.
We kicked things off on Wharf Street, the most charming cobblestone street ever. Seriously, that place is like stepping into a time machine—if the time machine also had bougie restaurants and the occasional smell of chowder wafting by. It’s got that gritty, historic vibe that photographs so damn well. The skies stayed dark and broody (hello, yes please), which gave me full permission to bust out the flash and get creative with light. This kind of day is where the moody magic happens.
Matt and Maylen came up to Portland for the weekend to do the touristy thing and get their engagement photos done. These two were just so easy together—walking hand-in-hand, cracking up mid-pose, stopping to admire the city. The architecture in Old Port is so damn beautiful, you don’t even need to hunt for good backdrops—it’s just there. Brick textures, old iron railings, cute alleyways. Basically a photographer’s playground.
Then we wandered down to this little hidden beach area—literally tucked at the end of a random parking lot. It gave us a soft spot of nature to balance out all the city grit. Oh—and their very good doggo came along for the ride, casually trotting beside them and stealing a little spotlight (as dogs tend to do).
I’m always hyped to shoot in Portland. It’s gritty, gorgeous, and full of weird little gems around every corner. Matt and Maylen made the most of every minute, every raindrop dodged, and every photo op. Rain may have tried to ruin the party, but we weren’t having it.
Planning your own Old Port session?
Bring comfy shoes (trust me on this cobblestone life), maybe an umbrella just in case, and an open mind. This city loves a good love story—and it sure knows how to show up for it.
