Maine & NH Wedding Photographer //Not Morning People, But Sunrise People (Turns Out There’s a Difference) and why sunrise is the perfect time for your engagement session
Because getting up at 4:30am is dumb... unless it’s for this.
Let’s be clear: I am not a morning person. If the sun isn’t up, neither am I — unless there’s coffee involved and a damn good reason to trade my warm bed for a frozen beach.
But here’s the thing: some couples? They get it. They say yes to sunrise sessions even though it means setting five alarms, putting on jeans in the dark, and packing hand warmers like we're going into battle — all for that light. And honestly? Worth it.
Sunrise Hits Different
There’s something about sunrise light that just goes hard. It’s soft, low, golden, and glowy — like the universe is apologizing for dragging us out of bed by handing us a dreamy photoshoot filter. And when you're standing somewhere wild and wide open — like on the edge of a mountain, a frozen field, or, my personal favorite, the Maine coast — and the sun creeps over the horizon and slaps you with all that golden drama?
The Pros:
Zero crowds. No tourists, no strangers awkwardly watching your PDA, no one yelling “congrats!” from a passing car. Just peace, light, and probably a couple seagulls judging us.
The best backdrops. I’m talking oceans with golden reflections, misty mornings that look straight out of a fantasy film, and snow that glows in the early light. It’s quiet, cinematic, and wildly romantic.
It’s a core memory kind of vibe. There’s something about freezing your butt off together at the crack of dawn that really bonds people. You’ll remember it. And the photos? Fire.
The Cons: Also Very Real
It’s cold as hell in the winter. Especially in Maine. I’ve done sunrise sessions in 16-degree weather. That’s not “just a little chilly” — that’s “my face hurts” cold. I’m bundled like the Michelin Man, and my camera batteries are crying.
The sun rises early. Like, painfully early. Especially in summer when you’ve gotta be camera-ready by 5am. You will question your life choices. You will consider canceling. But once that light hits? You’ll forget you ever had a bedtime.
If you're not a morning person, you're in good company. But if you’re down to be a sunrise person for one day — to embrace the chill, the quiet, and the golden hour that actually hits before 7am — I’m 100% down to be there with you (mumbling into my coffee and taking epic photos).
So…
Wanna freeze our faces off together and get the most underrated lighting of your life? Let’s do it. I’ll bring the hand warmers.
