Maine & NH Wedding Photographer | The Amount of Wedding Photography Scams Right Now Is Honestly Insane
I don’t scare easily in this industry. But lately? I’m genuinely appalled.
It’s officially wedding scam season. Every year, I see the same thing. Posts from brides in Facebook groups saying:
“My photographer took my deposit and ghosted.”
“They showed up, shot my wedding… and never delivered the photos.”
“They stopped responding after the wedding.”
That’s not a misunderstanding. That’s not “oops, life got busy.”
That’s theft.
You cannot redo your wedding day. If your photographer disappears or never delivers, those moments are gone. And the idea that someone could take thousands of dollars and just vanish? It makes my blood boil.
So let’s talk about how to protect yourself.
Not in a panic way. In a smart, grown-up, cover-your-ass way.
Wedding Vendor Vetting Checklist
Before you send a deposit to any vendor (photographer, planner, florist, whoever), run through this:
✅ 1. Do They Have a Real Website?
Not just Instagram. Not just a Facebook page.
A legitimate website with:
Full name
Clear contact info
Portfolio (and do all of their pictures look consistent because stealing photos from other photographers is a thing.)
Pricing structure or starting rates
If the only presence is a brand-new social account? Pause.
✅ 2. Can You See Full Galleries?
Not just highlight reels. Not just the best 20 images ever taken.
Ask to see at least two full wedding galleries. You want consistency. You want proof they can handle an entire day not just golden hour for 12 minutes.
✅ 3. Are Reviews Consistent (And Specific)?
Check:
Google
The Knot / WeddingWire
Real reviews usually mention details. Communication. Delivery time. Experience. If reviews are vague or all posted within the same week? Red flag.
✅ 4. Is There a Legit Contract?
No contract = no money.
A contract should clearly state:
Payment schedule
Cancellation policy
Delivery timeline
What happens if the vendor cannot perform
If someone says, “Don’t worry about it, we’ll keep it simple”? No. We will not.
✅ 5. Do They Carry Insurance?
Professionals have liability insurance. Venues often require it. If your photographer has no idea what you’re talking about when you ask? That’s information.
✅ 6. Are They Communicating Clearly?
Pay attention early.
Are they answering emails in a reasonable time?
Are they professional but human? (Ok, I’m not the most professional…..)
Do they dodge direct questions?
If communication is messy before you book, it will not magically improve later.
✅ 7. Is the Price Suspiciously Low?
Listen. Budgets are real.
But if someone is charging half (or less) than everyone else in your area for full-day coverage, ask why. Sometimes it’s new talent building a portfolio. Sometimes it’s someone who has no idea what they’re doing.
And sometimes… it’s worse.
You’re not just paying for someone to show up. You’re paying for experience, backup systems, equipment redundancy, editing workflow, and accountability.
This isn’t about creating fear. It’s about being informed.
There are so many hardworking, ethical vendors who care deeply about their couples. The fact that some people are out here scamming makes it harder for everyone.
Your wedding day is not a test run.
Your memories are not replaceable.
Your money is not disposable.
Ask the questions.
Read the fine print.
Trust your gut.
You deserve vendors who show up, deliver, and treat your wedding like it actually matters, because it does.
