Maine & NH Wedding Photographer | How Lighting Changes the Entire Mood of Your Wedding Photos
If you want to understand a photographer’s style, don’t just look at the poses.
Look at the light.
Lighting is the difference between soft and romantic, bold and dramatic, clean and editorial, dark and cinematic. It sets the entire mood before you even realize why you like a photo.
Two photographers can stand in the exact same spot at the exact same wedding and produce completely different images — simply because of how they use light.
Some photographers lean heavily into natural light. Some prefer bright, evenly lit images. Some aim for a flash-free, documentary look.
None of those are wrong.
But they are very different vibes.
That’s why it’s so important to pay attention to lighting style when you’re choosing your photographer. It’s not just about “do I like this photo?” It’s about asking, how does this light make me feel?
For me? I take a more traditional, intentional approach using off-camera flash.
And I love it.
Off-camera flash lets me shape the light instead of just accepting whatever the room gives us. It creates depth. Separation. Drama. It keeps skin tones clean and consistent even in dark venues.
It also creates some of my favorite visual effects:
Starbursts in the background when lights hit just right
Halo lighting around your heads during first dances
Clean, dimensional portraits in spaces that would otherwise feel flat
Instead of muddy shadows or harsh overhead lighting, you get controlled contrast. You get glow. You get photos that feel intentional.
Dark reception space? No problem.
Candlelit ceremony? Perfect.
Rainy day portraits? Even better.
Lighting isn’t just about making sure you can see the couple. It’s about shaping the mood of the entire frame.
And selfishly? I’m obsessed with how my lighting makes my couples look. Confident. Defined. Elevated. Like the main characters they are.
When I look at my galleries, I don’t just see moments. I see depth and atmosphere. I see light working for the couple instead of against them.
So when you’re choosing your photographer, don’t just scroll fast. Slow down and study the light.
Because lighting isn’t a small detail.
It’s the whole vibe.
