Lindsey & Shane’s Inn by the Sea Wedding | Cape Elizabeth, Maine Wedding Photographer

If there’s one thing I’ve learned from photographing weddings, it’s that no matter what Mother Nature throws at you, the wedding day always finds a way.

Lindsey and Shane’s wedding day at Inn by the Sea in Cape Elizabeth, Maine started with a little more excitement than anyone had planned.

And by excitement, I mean a full-blown coastal Maine windstorm.

The wind and rain had picked up overnight, leaving branches and debris scattered across the property. When I arrived at Inn by the Sea that morning, the entire resort was without power. The strong winds had even damaged part of the reception tent, knocking out several of the support structures.

Not exactly the wedding morning anyone envisions.

But here’s the thing about great wedding days: they aren’t defined by what goes wrong. They’re defined by how everyone responds.

Inside the bridal suite, the mood remained surprisingly relaxed. The hair and makeup team worked their magic using natural window light while I handed over a few portable lights to help keep things moving. The bridesmaids laughed, chatted, and rolled with the punches. Nobody was panicking. Nobody was spiraling.

They were simply focused on what mattered most: Lindsey and Shane were getting married.

As if the wedding gods decided they had caused enough trouble for one morning, the power came back on just as makeup was wrapping up and dresses were going on. Around the same time, the tent company arrived and began repairs to get everything ready for the reception.

Things were looking up.

Fortunately, the ceremony was taking place in Portland at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, where the weather felt much more manageable.

The cathedral itself is stunning. Towering architecture, beautiful stained glass, and the kind of atmosphere that immediately makes you pause and take it all in. Lindsey and Shane chose a traditional Catholic ceremony surrounded by family and friends, and it was absolutely beautiful to witness.

The priest was engaging, thoughtful, and brought warmth to every part of the ceremony. You could feel how meaningful the experience was for both Lindsey and Shane as they exchanged vows and officially became husband and wife.

After the ceremony, we were given permission to photograph inside the cathedral, which was an incredible opportunity. We completed family portraits and captured some of the couple’s portraits among the beautiful architecture of the church.

With the wind still making its presence known outside, we braved the elements for a few outdoor portraits before heading back to Cape Elizabeth.

And what a difference a few hours can make.

When we returned to Inn by the Sea, everything had been transformed. The tent had been repaired, the property looked incredible, and the entire reception space was fully set up and ready for guests. You would never have guessed the morning had started in complete chaos.

The reception kicked off with one of the most enthusiastic grand entrances I’ve seen in a while. Their guests erupted with cheers as Lindsey and Shane entered the tent, setting the tone for the rest of the evening.

Their first dance was sweet and emotional, a quiet moment before the celebration shifted into high gear.

Then came dinner, drinks, and one absolutely packed dance floor.

The open dancing portion of the night was the kind of beautiful chaos photographers secretly love. Friends singing at the top of their lungs. Family members showing off questionable dance moves. Guests crowding the dance floor from edge to edge. Pure joy from start to finish.

It was impossible not to smile watching it all unfold.

As the evening continued, something else happened.

The sun finally decided to make an appearance.

After battling wind, rain, power outages, and tent repairs all day, we headed down to the beach at Inn by the Sea for sunset portraits. The golden light broke through the clouds and gave us the perfect ending to an unforgettable day.

The beach offered a completely different backdrop from the cathedral and reception, adding another layer of variety to their gallery. The two of them walked along the shoreline, soaking in a few quiet moments together as newlyweds while the sun dipped toward the horizon.

It felt like the perfect reward after everything the day had thrown at them.

Lindsey and Shane’s wedding was a reminder that weddings don’t have to be perfect to be incredible. Sometimes the unexpected moments become part of the story. Sometimes the challenges make the memories even better.

And sometimes, after a day filled with wind, rain, and uncertainty, the sun comes out exactly when it needs to.
