Maine & NH Wedding Photographer | Why You Still Need a Rain Plan (Even If You’re Manifesting Sunshine)
I know, I know — this is old news. You’ve heard it before. As a matter of fact, I have written this blog before and will be writing it yearly. “Have a rain plan!” But every single season, without fail, there’s at least one wedding that reminds me exactly why I keep saying it.
Because here’s the deal: rain happens. Sometimes it’s a sprinkle, sometimes it’s a full-blown monsoon. And the couples who roll with it — who plan ahead and trust their vendors — still have the best damn day.
Make sure your ceremony space can actually fit everyone.
If you’re moving your ceremony indoors, make sure the backup space can comfortably hold your guests — not cram them in like a sweaty game of Tetris. If your venue says, “Oh yeah, we can fit everyone in the barn if it rains,” double-check that you’re not sacrificing elbow room or sound quality.
Lighting matters — especially for your photographer.
Dark barns, dim corners, or overhead fluorescents aren’t exactly flattering. Make sure your photographer (hi, it’s me 👋) has the gear and space to light things properly. A good rain plan doesn’t just keep people dry — it keeps your photos looking amazing even when the sun ghosts us.
It’s totally okay to do formals indoors.
Family formals, couple portraits, wedding party shots — they can all happen inside and still look incredible. I promise. I’ve done some of my favorite portraits in stairwells, lobbies, and tucked-away corners. The key is good lighting and a photographer who knows how to work with it.
It’s also okay if you’re inside for 100% of your wedding.
Really. You didn’t fail the wedding gods because you didn’t get a golden-hour glow. You still got married. You still laughed, cried, and celebrated with your people. That’s what matters — not whether your hair survived the humidity.
So yeah, have a rain plan. Not because you’re being pessimistic — but because it lets you relax when Mother Nature decides to be dramatic. Your wedding will still be beautiful, your photos will still be killer, and you’ll have an awesome story to tell.
