Maine & NH Wedding Photographer | Want a Photographer Below Market Price? Just Don’t Skip This Stuff

Let’s just say it straight:
Not everyone has a massive wedding budget. I get it. Truly.

If you’re trying to stay under market value for a photographer, that’s your call. No judgment over here.

But (you knew there was a “but”) you’ve gotta be smart about it.

Because this is one of the only things from your wedding that actually lasts.

So if you’re going budget, here’s how to not completely screw yourself over:

Make sure the portfolio is actually theirs

Yeah… this is a thing.

Ask them straight up. Where are these images from? Reverse Google them. Are they full weddings? Styled shoots? Workshops?

If they get weird about it or vague? 🚩

You deserve to know what you’re actually hiring.

Ask to see full wedding galleries.. like multiple

Not just the highlight reel. Everyone’s Instagram looks good.

I want you to see the whole day: getting ready in bad lighting, family formals, reception chaos, all of it.

That’s where you find out if they can actually deliver consistently… or if they just got lucky with a few good shots.

Ask if they have insurance

This one’s not sexy, but it matters.

A legit professional will have liability insurance. A lot of venues require it.

If they don’t have it, that’s not just “oops” that’s a problem.

Read the reviews like your life depends on it

Listen, you read reviews before buying a $20 random gadget online, right?

Same energy here… except this is your wedding.

Look for patterns. Are people raving about reliability? Communication? Or are there red flags hiding between the lines?

Reviews tell you what it’s actually like to work with someone, not just what their photos look like.

If they’re offering to shoot for free… pause

I know it sounds tempting. Free is a great price.

But here’s the reality: most of the time, this means they’re brand new and trying to build a portfolio.

And that’s not a bad thing… unless they’re doing it at your wedding.

This is not the time for someone to be figuring it out as they go,….unless you’re fully okay with that risk.

Understand what you’re trading for that lower price

You can absolutely find newer photographers or students who are talented and worth it.

But don’t expect 10+ years of experience, problem-solving, lighting mastery, and timeline control at a bargain rate.

That’s not how this works.

Look hard. Then look again. Then decide.

Don’t rush it.

Go through galleries. Zoom in. Sit with it. Ask questions.

And when it’s time to sign? Be 100% sure.

Trust your gut

If something feels off, it probably is.

If you feel confident, comfortable, and like they actually know what they’re doing? That’s your person.

Budget weddings can still be incredible. Seriously.

Just don’t cut corners on the one thing that’s responsible for remembering it all.

Because once the day’s over…
those photos are what you’ve got left.

Make sure they’re worth it.
