Maine + NH Wedding Photographer | Rain, Tears, and Bad Dance Moves: Why Perfect Wedding Days Are Overrated
Everyone wants the perfect wedding day, sunshine, blue skies, not a hair out of place. But let me tell you something I’ve learned after shooting more weddings than I can count: the perfect days are fine, but the real stories? They usually come with a little chaos.
Take Simi and Joe’s wedding, for example. Their day was one for the books and not because everything went smoothly, but because we rolled with it and still made it beautiful as hell.
The forecast was basically threatening to drown us, but the hair and makeup artist, Sarah, was an absolute rockstar. She hustled and got Simi ready early so we could squeeze in portraits and family formals before the storm hit full force. The bride’s mom really wanted outdoor portraits, so we made it happen, in between rainfalls, wind gusts, and the occasional “oh crap, grab the umbrellas!” moment.
But here’s the wild part: by working fast and dodging raindrops, we actually got all the portraits done before the ceremony. And not just done, but done well. That meant the most stressful part of the day (you know, wrangling family and trying to look chill while sweating in formal wear) was checked off early.
Simi and Joe were so damn happy. They got the outdoor shots they wanted, some time to relax before the ceremony even started, and honestly? The rain gave me an excuse to create some killer indoor-lit portraits. The kind of moody, romantic stuff you just can’t fake on a sunny day.
And it’s not the first time a little weather’s tried to test us. Alyssa and Devin’s island wedding happened during a tropical storm. Yep, sideways rain, gusting wind, and a boat ride that had me questioning my life choices for a solid ten minutes. The wind threatened to knock me over more than once, but damn if that day doesn’t live rent-free in my memory. The photos were raw, emotional, and full of energy because when the weather gets wild, people let go of perfection and just live in it.
That’s the thing about weddings, the best ones aren’t perfect. The best ones are real.
Because at the end of the day, what makes a wedding amazing isn’t the weather, or the decor, or how well the plan goes. It’s the people, the emotions, and the way you roll with it together.
So yeah, give me a rainy day over a flawless one any time. The imperfect stuff always tells the better story.
