Maine + NH Wedding/ Engagement Photographer | It’s Not the Season, It’s the Light
Look, I love fall as much as the next person. It’s hands down my favorite season . It’s perfect hoodie weather, those insane colors, and fair season (yes, I will never say no to fried dough). It doesn’t get much better than that.
But here’s the thing: just because the backdrop looks like a postcard doesn’t mean your engagement photos will automatically look amazing. Harsh truth? The lighting is what makes or breaks your photos — not the leaves, not the time of year, not the cute boots or pumpkin spice vibes.
Lighting is everything.
Beautiful, golden light? Hell yes. A moody, overcast day that makes colors pop and skin tones soft? Even better sometimes. What you don’t want? Blinding midday sun that has you squinting and sweating while I try to make it look intentional.
There’s a reason I suggest certain locations to my couples — and spoiler alert, it’s not just because they’re pretty. It’s because the lighting there has those sunny vibes.
Take Foss Mountain, for example. From a golden light standpoint, it’s unbeatable. You’re literally standing on top of a mountain with the sun wrapping around you in all the right ways. That’s where the good stuff happens — that glow, that warmth, that moody depth that makes photos feel alive.
So yeah, pick a season you love — but trust me when I say it’s the light that does the real heavy lifting. You could be standing in a grocery store parking lot, and if the light’s right? It’s still going to look killer.
